Instructions to Referees for the 2019 Season
For Grade 6 and 7 Referees, this will be the registration/assessment process for 2019.
1. When you register, your “assessment fee” will be paid through Game Officials.
a. For State Referees, the assessment fee will be $90 ($75 for assessment as referee and
$15 for assessment as AR). At registration you will be charged the incorporated rate: $90 for assessments, $75 for USSF registration, and $10 state maintenance fee – total payment at the time of registration will be $175.
b. For Grade 7 referees, the assessment fee will be $75 (as a referee). At registration you will be charged the incorporated rate: $75 for assessment, $45 for USSF registration, and $10 state maintenance fee – total payment at the time of registration will be $130.
c. The SRC will cover the expense of additional assessments you may need above the minimum requirements. For example, if your first assessment was deemed not a suitable test; you will not have to pay for another assessment. This is a change in that you, as the referee, will not need to pay for extra assessments.
d. Upgrade candidates will receive information on payments from the Michael Tata, SRA when they become eligible for assessments. Upgrade assessors will be assigned using the same process described below.
e. Referees will no longer need to worry about when and how to pay assessors as payments will be made by the SRC on behalf of the referee.
2. You will no longer need to chase down your assigned an assessor. There will be “Assessor Assignors” in different areas of the state, supervised by Art Jaspe. They will assign assessors to games after referees have been assigned. This eliminates the need for you to try to find a game on a date when both you and an assessor are available – an assessor will “appear” on one of your regularly assigned matches. It is imperative that you keep your calendars up-to-date.
3. Assessors will do a full assessment on all officials on a match. It is our hope that most referees will be assessed on more games than the minimum required for recertification. This cost is covered by the SRC as a part of referee development.
4. There is the reality that you may be assessed more frequently than in previous seasons. Keep in mind that you must have a greater number or equal number of passed assessments than failed ones. This applies to all assessments you receive; even those that you do not need for recertification, regardless of match level.
5. In the case of a Grade 7 referee, an AR assessment is not required for recertification, meaning a failed assistant referee assessment would not affect your recertification for the next season. However, it is something you would want to work on and improve.
6. This process applies only to WNY assessments. Assessors on national assignments will continue to be coordinated by Art Jaspe and Kevin Barci.
7. Each Grade 6 and 7 referee (including those who may receive assignments and assessments on national matches) will need to pay the assessment fee at registration and will be assigned assessors as required by his or her grade.
8. It remains the referee’s responsibility to ensure that he or she has passed the required number of assessments for recertification considerations. If you have any issues or concerns about your assessments, contact Art Jaspe. Do not wait until the end of the season. If you do not pass the required assessments, you will not be eligible to recertify for your referee grade the following year.
